Andy Murray has blamed “hitting too many golf balls” for his debilitating back injury.
Andy Murray hurt his back playing golf
The 39-year-old sportsman took up golf after retiring from professional tennis in 2024 and previously confessed to spending five to six hours a day working on his swing.
But Murray has to take it easier these days after injury forced him off the green for two months because he was practicing his swing far too much.
He told Telegraph Sport: “I got injured. I missed about two months of golf from the end of April through till the end of May. It was just hitting too many golf balls, so I had to have an injection in my back, which has actually helped me to start playing again.”
Although Andy is taking it easier now, he’s very happy with how his golf game has improved over the past two years.
He said: “I’m not doing any more five or six-hour range sessions, just much lighter practice days on the golf course, but I officially got my handicap down to scratch the other day in the club championships. I shot a 75, which is three over par, but it was horrific weather.”
The former world number one and two-time Wimbledon winner previously spoke of how much he enjoys his freedom now he’s no longer competing professionally in tennis.
He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “Since I’ve stopped, I feel really free and have got lots of time to do whatever it is I want.
“I can dedicate time to my children and have free time to play golf or go to the gym on my own terms.
“It is really nice and I didn’t expect that. I was expecting to find retirement hard and be missing tennis a lot and wanting to get back on the tennis court on tour.
“So far it has been the complete opposite to what I was thinking.”
