Melanie Chisholm is addressing longtime assumptions people have made about her sexuality.
The 52-year-old Spice Girls star, better known to fans as Mel C and “Sporty Spice,” recently reflected on the rumors that have followed her throughout her career. Speaking on The Mitch Churi Chat Show, Mel C said many people assumed she was gay because of her athletic image and signature style within the iconic girl group.
“You’ve got all the different ones and the one who’s in the active wear. It was assumed or suggested that I was gay,” Mel C explained.
While the singer said she was never personally bothered by the speculation itself, she took issue with the stereotypes behind it.
“I don’t personally have a problem with that. I mean, it’s none of their friggin’ business. But I just thought, to base it on somebody’s look or the way that they dress, yeah, it was a bit s–t of them.”
Over the years, those assumptions also contributed to Mel C building a strong and loyal LGBTQ+ fanbase, something she has often acknowledged and celebrated.
This isn’t the first time Mel C has spoken about the issue. In 2024, the singer discussed what she described as the “very rude” assumptions people made based on her appearance and fashion choices.
“People said I looked like a lesbian because I had short hair. But how can you look like a lesbian? I find it very rude and extremely offensive to gay people… It’s a stereotypical thing,” Mel C said at the time, according to Attitude.
