It’s Memorial Day weekend in the US, meaning many folks have tomorrow off, and Disney took advantage of that holiday to launch Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu. The film made $82 million this weekend, and will make $102 million domestic through the holiday. Overseas, it earned $64 million, to bring its totals for the long weekend to $165 million. This is the worst opening for a Star Wars film since Disney took the reins, but with positive reviews and a budget of $165 million, it should fare better than the much more expensive Solo.
Meanwhile, Obsession had the rare distinction of being a film to make 30$ more in its second weekend of wide release – $22 million – than its first, which was a $16 million take. Through the holiday, that total should climb to $28.2 million, bringing its total receipts to $58.5 million domestic and $74 million globally. This is a gigantic hit for being a film made for under $1 million, and bought by Focus Features for just $14 million.
The rest of the top five was filled with older releases. Michael took the third spot with $20 million, which will end up being around $25.7 million through Monday. The film has grossed $319 million domestic and $788 million worldwide.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 took fourth with $12.6 million, climbing to $16.5 million through the holiday. The sequel 20 years in the making has made $197 million in North America and $604 million globally.
And in fifth place was The Sheep Detectives, falling just 6% to $8.9 million, and a projected $12.3 million through Monday. It has enjoyed strong word of mouth, and has grossed $46.9 million domestic on a $75 million budget.
Two new wide releases failed to break into the top five. Passenger came in sixth place with $8.7 million, and that should increase to $10.5 million through tomorrow. The horror film received a B- Cinemascore and mixed reviews, but cost only $15 million to produce.
And I Love Boosters came in 8th, only $3.8 million over the weekend and a projected $4.7 million through Monday. Critics gave the film great reviews, while audiences were more mixed with a B Cinemascore. The film cost $20 million to produce.
