In the face of no new major studio releases, Michael reclaimed the top spot at the box office in its fourth weekend of release with a $26 million haul. It has made $283 million domestically and $703.8 million worldwide.
Second place belonged to The Devil Wears Prada 2, which picked up $18 million in its third weekend of release. It has made $175.9 million in North America and another $370 million overseas, bringing its total take to $546.2 million globally.
Obsession, the new horror film from first time feature director Curry Barker, made $16 million in its opening weekend, which was good enough for third place. With a strong A- Cinemascore, excellent word of mouth and great critical reviews, the extremely low-budget film acquired by Focus Features for $14 million looks to have great legs.
Fourth place belonged to Mortal Kombat II, which fell a dramatic 65% from opening weekend to bring in $13.4 million. It’s made $62.2 million in North America and $101 million worldwide on an $80 million budget.
The Sheep Detectives took the fifth spot, making $9.3 million in its second weekend. It fell only 38% from its first weekend, and has made $29.6 million domestically and $58.7 million globally.
The new Guy Ritchie film In the Gray came in 9th at the box office with a $3 million take and a B Cinemascore, and generally terrible critic reviews. This is well below average for his films.
Another new release this week, Is God Is, came in 10th with a $2.2 million haul, a B+ Cinemascore and great critic reviews.
In a bit of bad news, the concert film Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) fell a startling 88% from its $7.5 million opening last weekend to bring in only $800,000 this weekend, good for 13th place.
