Gracie Abrams officially kicked off her Daughter From Hell era with “Hit the Wall.”

The singer released the song — the first from her third record — on Friday, May 15. Abrams announced earlier this week that Daughter From Hell would be released on July 17.

“Whoa whoa whoa,” she wrote on Instagram. “Freaking out I am so ready for it to be yours.”

Upon the release of “Hit the Wall” in the early hours of Friday morning, fans were quick to decode every line of lyrics. One Reddit thread broke down the powerful track with an “official discussion” about different aspects within the song, which appears to be about self-destructive tendencies.

“I’m a crack in the pavement, I’m a slip knot / I’m afraid that my fortress is a glass box / I should know what I’m playin’, but I forgot,” she sings on the first verse. “Felt good for a day, but that stopped / And I once it saw it clearly, but it’s bloodshot / And I want you so badly, but I close off.”

What Is Gracie Abrams’ ‘Hit the Wall’ About?

It appears Abrams is singing about what she does wrong in romantic relationships.

“I wanna be stable, but I do cave / I use when I’m able, I downgrade,” the lyrics in the second verse read. “I barely deserve it if you do stay / I wish you would anyway.”

Who Is Gracie Abrams’ ‘Hit the Wall’ About?

It appears Abrams wrote the song about herself.

“This was the song Gracie Abrams and I wrote one day – when we were literally hitting a wall creatively – that broke through and brought everything else into focus,” her collaborator Aaron Dessner wrote about the track on social media. “Gracie you’re a genius and I’m so grateful for all the trust you put in me to help excavate these songs.”

Did Gracie Abrams Release a Music Video for ‘Hit the Wall’?

Yes, along with the song’s release, Abrams appeared in a music video for the track directed by Renell Medrano.

In the video Abrams can be seen opening the same blue door into several scenarios, including one scene in a doctor’s office, another with a tree on fire and one with the singer on a bed.
