In early 2020, the guys who run My Pet Flamingo (independent label that primarily releases physical editions of vaporwave and adjacent releases) announced they were putting together a documentary of the vaporwave music scene. It reached its IndieGoGo goal for financial support (with a slew of benefits and tiers, such as soundtracks and physical releases of the film when finished).
Well, that’s when the world kind of stopped for a while, so the doc had to slow down for a bit (as it involved a lot of traveling for their interview subjects). Smash cut to 6 years later, it’s finally here!
It’s a nearly 2 hour broad overview of the beginnings of the scene, the vast variety of sub genres under the vaporwave umbrella, the transitions to live shows, and lots of talking heads of various artists from over the years.
