If you just finished Netflix’s horror miniseries Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen and found yourself staring at the screen in total confusion, you’re far from alone. The six-episode series, which premiered March 26, 2026, left many viewers scrambling to piece together what actually happened — and what that haunting final scene really means.
Here’s the full ending, broken down.
The Setup: A Curse, a Cabin and a Countdown
The series follows Rachel Harkin (Camila Morrone) and Nicky Cunningham (Adam DiMarco) as they arrive at his family’s remote cabin days before their wedding. What Nicky doesn’t fully grasp is that Rachel carries a generations-old family curse threatening her life if she does not marry her soulmate by sundown on her wedding day.
Showrunner Haley Z. Boston told Entertainment Weekly, “We wanted you as the audience to feel the paranoia and the fear that Rachel is feeling. Even when she’s not in the scene, we were always thinking about constructing the show in terms of her discomfort.”
That persistent dread is deliberate — and it builds directly to the series’ devastating conclusion.
The Curse, Explained
In episode 4, the Witness (Zlatko Burić) reveals the full history of Rachel’s inherited curse. Generations earlier, a bride made a deal with Death after her groom died before their wedding. Death could bring him back, but only if each future descendant married their soulmate by sundown on their wedding day. Failure meant death by bleeding.
The curse passed down through generations until it reached Rachel. The Witness also reveals that Rachel’s mother, Alexandra (Victoria Pedretti), died because she did not believe her partner was her soulmate.
Here’s the critical detail many viewers missed: the curse can affect not only Rachel but also Nicky’s family if the marriage proceeds under false belief. Within the show’s logic, a “soulmate” must be someone the person genuinely believes in without doubt.
A loophole does exist. Individuals who never get engaged or intend to marry still carry the curse but avoid the sundown deadline. However, this option is never presented to Rachel. She also learns she could drink a potion to ensure Nicky is her soulmate, but she does not use it.
The Wedding Falls Apart
At the altar, Nicky hesitates. Personal doubts — including revelations about his family — cause him to waver. He initially refuses to fully accept Rachel’s warnings about the curse.
As the sun sets, Rachel no longer believes Nicky is her soulmate, and the wedding is jeopardized.
The consequences are immediate and devastating. The curse begins affecting Nicky’s married relatives who doubt their own marriages and no longer believe their spouses are their soulmates. They begin to bleed to death. Nicky’s mother is among the first to die. His sister Portia also falls victim.

Nicky does not die because he continues to believe Rachel is his soulmate. Boston explained in an interview with RadioTimes, “It makes sense to me that Nicky would still believe she’s his soulmate. He’s such a romantic, and ultimately, I think he’s doing what he thinks is the right thing.”
Rachel, on the other hand, married someone she no longer believes is her soulmate. She collapses outside the cabin and bleeds to death.
But death isn’t the end for Rachel.
Rachel Becomes the New Witness
Rachel is resurrected as the new Witness — now permanently bound to attend every future wedding in Nicky’s family and carry out the role associated with the curse.
She returns inside and finds Nicky in a state of shock following the deaths of his family members. DiMarco described Nicky’s condition in a comment to Netflix’s Tudum: “It’s shock, a feeling of being catatonic or spent, like you’re living in a nightmare and you haven’t woken up yet.”
Rachel says a final goodbye to Nicky and leaves the room. She then encounters Nicky’s nephew Jude (Sawyer Fraser), warning him, “But don’t worry, I’ll be there to witness.”
She discovers a note left by the previous Witness reading, “Your turn!” The previous Witness dies at the reception table, marking the end of his role and the full transfer of the curse’s responsibility to Rachel.
That Final Scene Changes Everything
