The origin of the backrooms, a creepypasta that inspired amateur computer games and the short film series started by a very young Kane Parsons (who is also directing this very movie!), is from the cesspit that is 4chan. It was an anonymous response to a 20+ year old picture of a liminal looking office space that was mostly empty.
Now, this isn’t the first non-awful thing to come from 4chan — they gave us longcat, for pete’s sake — and this also isn’t the first time a creepypasta has been adapted into a feature film. We all remember slenderman (which came from a slightly less problematic message board, something awful rest in piss lowtax you piece of shit), right? And then there was a syfy anthology series — i think, i’m not a journalist and googling this, okay — that had an episode based on candle cove. This is the first time, however, that a prestigious production house has taken on internet lore, and it boasts an impressive cast too. Like, how the fuck did a 20 year old director making a movie about a creepy pasta land Oscar nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, idek. Skills, baby.
Anyway, ONTD, what is your favorite creepypasta? My favorite is the one from reddit about a search and rescue officer for the US Forest Service where people go missing and stairs mysteriously appear in the middle of the woods.
shoutout to queenursula for notifying me of the new trailer and letting me use my silly little writeup.
