Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man offered fans of the British crime drama to their years-long question: What happened to Tommy Shelby?
Cillian Murphy made his long-awaited return as the Birmingham-based gangster with questionable morals for one final battle on Friday, March 20. The movie, available to stream via Netflix, saw Murphy’s Tommy go head-to-head with his eldest son, Erasmus “Duke” Shelby, played by Barry Keoghan.
Murphy starred in six seasons of Peaky Blinders from 2013 to 2022 before the show came to an end. The final episode offered an ambiguous ending for our antihero, but fans wanted more — and the follow-up film delivered.
Now, Tommy is a recluse following the death of his older brother Arthur Shelby (played by Paul Anderson in the series). After a few visits discussing how Duke is running the Peaky Blinders, Tommy returns home. Back in Birmingham, he discovers that his sister Ada Shelby (Sophie Rundle), was shot execution style by the new big bad John Beckett (Tim Roth).
The Peaky Blinders — with their leader back in action — put an end to Beckett. The movie ends with Tommy’s death at the hands of his son.
The show’s creator, Steven Knight, promised there’s more to come from the Peaky Blinders universe — but no details have been shared just yet. It seems the film has allowed for the next generation of Birmingham’s most feared gang to take hold.

What Is John Beckett’s Job in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie?
Tim Roth made his Peaky Blinders universe debut as John Beckett in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. He’s introduced as a Nazi Party sympathizer who recruits Duke Shelby to assist with helping Germany win World War II.
Why Isn’t Finn Shelby in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie?
Harry Kirton played Finn Shelby — the family’s youngest sibling — for a bulk of the Peaky Blinders series. At one point in the film, Tommy notes to Ada (after her death) that he’s the last of the Shelby siblings left. While many character details were shared within the story, there was no mention of Finn.
Some fans have speculated that this was intentional because in the Peaky Blinders final season, Finn gets shut out of the family and promises to get revenge on Duke. Could we be seeing more from him in the future?
Why Isn’t Lizzie Shelby in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie?
This disappearance seems kind of self-explanatory since Lizzie (Natasha O’Keeffe) left Tommy during the final season taking her stepson, Charles, with him. However, an update on her life would have been welcomed.

Where Was Tommy Shelby’s Son Charles in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie?
Speaking of Charles, he only briefly appeared in Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man. The character, who would have aged up due to the five year jump between the show and film, was actually on the front lines during WWII. There is a brief moment, during Tommy’s funeral, where Charles appears.
What Happened to Karl Thorne After Ada’s Death in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie?
After Ada’s death, Karl Thorne (Kasper Hilton-Hille) confronts his sister at their mom’s funeral. However, details about what happened to him were not revealed any further.
Where Was Alfie Solomons in the ‘Peaky Blinder’s Movie?
Perhaps the most upsetting absence was that of Tom Hardy’s Alfie Solomons. Where in the world was Alfie?
“I think, the thing is when you’re writing a TV series, you have the luxury of time and you can populate it with more characters. But for the film, I had to be laser-focused and it has to be on Tommy,” show’s creator Knight explained. “So the story determined who would be in the film, really.”
