A bride and groom’s wedding got cut short after a medical emergency left them racing to the hospital to treat a life-threatening affliction.

Claire and James Kelly spent roughly $26,000 and 10 months planning what the bride referred to as her “dream wedding.”

However, they had to leave their family and friends behind to celebrate without them after the groom fell to the floor in excruciating pain.

Things were going well for the newlyweds when they sat down to enjoy a wedding breakfast. That’s when James began to feel a “sharp” pain in his stomach.

“He went upstairs. I didn’t know at the time that he was experiencing any pain, so I was still downstairs talking to our family and having some food,” Claire told Kennedy News, via PEOPLE. “My maid of honor came to get me and took me upstairs.”

Shocked by the level of pain her new husband was experiencing, the bride called for an ambulance and rode to the hospital while still in her wedding gown. There he was diagnosed with acute appendicitis, requiring urgent surgery, which took place a day and a half later.

“It was literally an hour after we got married,” she recalled. “We were so excited. I spent 10 months planning my dream wedding.”

Despite missing the festivities (and being unable to get a refund), Claire is looking at the incident with a different perspective.

“I’m happy we exchanged vows, over the moon we got the most important part done,” she explained, despite noting that the couple was “distraught” to have “missed out on the wedding they spent months carefully planning.”

“We didn’t get to enjoy the food, didn’t get a first dance, we didn’t get to be introduced as Mr. and Mrs., we didn’t stay at the bridal suite,” she reflected. “We spent the night in the hospital instead of the bridal suite. It really wasn’t the wedding I imagined.”

Thankfully, James is doing better. The duo plans to celebrate again in the future with a second, smaller reception.
