War of the Worlds was the unwanted big winner at this year’s Razzie Awards, taking five of the titles.
Ice Cube was named Worst Actor
The annual Golden Raspbery Awards honour the year’s worst films, and not only was the sci-fi remake named Worst Picture ahead of The Electric State, Hurry Up Tomorrow, Disney’s Snow White, and Star Trek: Section 31, it also scored Worst Actor for Ice Cube, Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-Off or Sequel, Worst Director for Rich Lee, and Worst Screenplay for Kenny Golde and Marc Hyman.
Organisers described War of the Worlds as becoming a “cult hate-watch classic almost immediately”.
Razzies bosses added: “War of the Worlds (the 2025 version) has been cemented in Razzie history as a near sweeper of our $4.97 trophy winner.
“Utterly destroying H.G. Wells’ classic novel, director Rich Lee (maybe inspired by Ed Wood) chose a goofy gimmick, hack dialogue and a particularly hilarious performance by its lead, Ice Cube, to seize 2025’s biggest number of statues.”
The only award the film was nominated for but didn’t get was Worst Screen Combo for Ice Cube and his Zoom camera, with the accolade instead going to “all seven artificial dwarfs” in Snow White. The dwarves also took Worst Supporting Actor.
The Razzies said: “It cost a fortune and lost a fortune, perhaps cursed by Walt [Disney] himself for having ignored his dying wish for it never to be remade.”
Worst Actress went to Rebel Wilson for her “not-quite-believable performance as an action hero in Bride Hard with weaponised curling irons,” while Scarlet Rose Stallone – whose father Sylvester Stallone has won 12 Razzies in 39 nominations over the years – was named Worst Supporting Actress “for her modernised performance in the odd western Gunslingers.”
On a more positive note, after previously being unwantedly singled out by the Razzies for Music, Mother’s Day and My Best Friend’s Girl, Kate Hudson was the recipient of the Razzie Redeemer Award thanks to her “pitch-perfect performance” in Song Sung Blue, for which she has been nominated for an Oscar.
Ice Cube previously told how he shot all of his War of the Worlds scenes during the COVID-19 lockdown away from the director and his co-stars.
He said: “That’s why it’s only the computer screen. But really, if s*** went down, everybody would only have their screen to look at.”
