A man is overheating and feeling seriously confused after being dubbed “financially abusive” and “controlling” by his roommate.

Taking to Reddit‘s popular “Am I the A–hole” forum, a 26-year-old explained that he and his 27-year-old roommate have been living together for a while and split rent and utilities.

However, they’ve been arguing lately about the temperature, with the Redditor explaining that his roommate is “completely nuts about being cozy” and insists on making it so hot that their place is comparable to a sauna.

After taking drastic steps to cool down the home, the man and his chilly roommate got into an argument.

In his post, the man said that his roommate tries to keep their thermostat set to 78 or 80 degrees all day long.

“I work from home and its like walking into a sauna – the meetings are grueling enough without feeling like i’m going to spontaneously combust,” the man wrote.

While they’ve had discussions about leaving their place at a “reasonable” temperature, the roommate never keeps up the promise.

“Finally, i told him if he wants to live in a constant heatwave, he can take out his wallet and write the extra checks. But he just said i’m being controlling and that temperature just isn’t that big of a deal,” the Redditor wrote.

Frustrated, they took action and changed the password to access the thermostat.

Instead of getting even by making the house freezing, he wrote that he set the temperature to “a reasonable 72 degrees during the day and 68 at night.”

“He finds out, changes the password, and proceeds to call me a total psycho. ‘acting like you’re the owner of the place’ he says,” the man wrote, adding that the roommate is now telling friends that he’s “emotionally abusive.”

The man wanted to know if he was in the wrong, and many fellow Redditors rushed to assure him that he wasn’t making a bad decision.

“That is an abnormal temperature. Keeping things a standard room temp seems more than fair and he can bundle up or buy a small heater if needed that badly (would probably save money on bills too),” one person wrote, while others wondered if the roommate suffered from an underlying health issue that made him require the extra heat.

Others were quick to agree, writing, “It’s always possible to wear more layers if you’re cold. You can’t take off your skin if you’re too hot. On top of that, I’m sure your utilities are through the roof. 80 degrees is not a reasonable temperature and it’s absurd to expect you to pay for that.”

They urged him to continue the password war.

Another person stressed that the man wasn’t acting inappropriately, writing, “It’s costing you money” and “It’s uncomfortable in your own house.”

“Is he a lizard person? Do you live in a terrarium? Get a new roommate, it’s time to move out. He does pay half the rent therefore you cannot reasonably lock him out of the a/c/heat unit,” a final Redditor joked.
