    3. ‘Dead of Winter’ (2025)

    IMDb rank: 6.1

Is Emma Thompson heading down the road paved by Liam Neeson with a late-career action renaissance? Dead of Winter stands out as a marked departure from most of Thompson’s previous films, even though this one doesn’t require her to be something she’s not. In other words, you’re not going to see sixty-something Thompson throwing around anyone.

The story is about Barb (Thompson), a widow whose quest to spread her husband’s ashes in Minnesota is complicated by a snowstorm and a disturbing scene she comes across. A young woman named Leah (Laurel Marsden) has been kidnapped by a suspicious-looking couple (Marc Menchaca and Judy Greer). Barb’s attempt to free Leah only makes her a target for the couple as well.

Dead of Winter will stream on HBO Max on February 20.

    2. ‘The Notebook’ (2004)

    IMDb rank: 7.8

The adaptation of Nicholas SparksThe Notebook didn’t wow critics, but audiences loved it and turned it into a box-office hit. Considering how far they’ve come since, it’s interesting to see Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams at a much earlier point in their careers. The story is set in the 1940s, as a working-class guy named Noah Calhoun (Gosling) falls hard for heiress Allison Hamilton (McAdams).

Although Allison and Noah are deeply in love, opposition from her wealthy family may keep them apart. The onset of World War 2 is also a major obstacle in their path. By the time Noah and Allison get on the same page, she’s already opened her heart to another man, Lon Hammond Jr. (James Marsden), which may mean someone’s heart will have to be broken.

The Notebook is streaming on HBO Max.

    1. ‘Life of Pi’ (2012)

    IMDb rank: 7.9

There are two versions of the events that befall young Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma) in director Ang Lee‘s terrific adaptation of Yann Martel‘s Life of Pi. But everyone prefers the version with the tiger, Richard Parker. The tiger and every other animal in this movie were created with incredibly impressive special effects, which are combined with some surreal visuals as well.

As his family prepares to emigrate to Canada with their zoo animals, a disaster at sea leaves Pi and a handful of the creatures forced to survive together on a raft. Richard Parker soon makes sure that he’s the only animal survivor of that disaster. To live through his time at sea, Pi has to find a way to ensure that he and the tiger can coexist. Life of Pi tells a beautiful story and is one of Lee’s best films as a director.

Life of Pi is streaming on HBO Max.
