Trump said troops from non-American NATO countries stayed “a little off the front lines” in Afghanistan, drawing outcry from British military veterans and political leaders.
Harry, who served two tours in Afghanistan with the British Army, said in a statement Friday that U.S. allies “answered” the call to stand with American troops after NATO invoked the Article 5 mutual defense pact following the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks.
“I served there. I made lifelong friends there. And I lost friends there. The United Kingdom alone had 457 service personnel killed,” the Duke of Sussex said. “Thousands of lives were changed forever. Mothers and fathers buried sons and daughters. Children were left without a parent. Families are left carrying the cost.”
“Those sacrifices deserve to be spoken about truthfully and with respect, as we all remain united and loyal to the defense of diplomacy and peace,” Harry added.
