Hillary Trubisky, the wife of Buffalo Bills quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, shared her emotional reaction to the surprising firing of Bills head coach Sean McDermott.
In an Instagram Story posted on Tuesday, January 20, Hillary gave Sean, 51, and his wife, Jamie McDermott, a shout-out for their friendship and support.
“Jamie and Sean are a huge reason why Buffalo has always felt like home to us,” she said. “So thankful for you both and everything you have done for our family on and off the field. Wherever you go next is very lucky.”
Hillary singled out her relationship with Jamie, writing, “Our night time dog walks, car pooling, and slime sales with the kids will always have a special place in my heart. You are truly a one of a kind human being and I am so lucky our paths crossed.”
Mitchell, 31, and Hillary got married in 2021 and share son Hudson, 3.
The quarterback, who backed up Bills starter Josh Allen, is currently an unrestricted free agent after signing a two-year deal in March 2024. Mitchell previously played one season in Buffalo under Sean in 2021.
Sean was fired as head coach of the Bills after nine seasons on Monday, January 19.
The decision sent major shockwaves throughout the NFL, with some of his former players reacting with their disapproval.
“This s*** here is so stupid honestly sickening,” Bills defensive tackle Jordan Phillips wrote via his Instagram Story on Monday. “The best coach I’ve ever been around.”
“Don’t make sense but ya got what ya wanted,” Bills defensive tackle DaQuan Jones wrote via his Story on Monday.
Bills owner Terry Pegula addressed McDermott’s firing during a press conference on Wednesday, January 21.
“I felt we hit the proverbial playoff wall,” Pegula, 74, said.
During Sean’s tenure with the franchise, the Bills never made a Super Bowl despite five AFC East titles and two trips to the AFC Championship game.
Pegula added, “We have to get it over the top, and that starts with hiring a new head coach.”
Sean reacted to his termination in a statement on Monday, referencing his family with Jamie. (The couple share three children: daughters Maddie, 17, and Kelly, 9, and son Gavin, 15.)
“For nearly a decade, I have had the opportunity to wake up every morning as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, which has truly been a gift,” he wrote. “I want to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to the Pegula family, the Buffalo Bills organization, and the fans for allowing me to live out the dream of being a head coach in the NFL in this incredibly special place.”
He continued, “I am proud and humbled to have worked alongside amazing staff and players as we shared life together and poured our hearts and souls into both winning football games and making a positive impact in our community. This community graciously embraced not only me but my family and, in many ways, helped raise our children over the last nine years. For that, I say thank you to all of the teachers, coaches, and friends we met along the way — the City of Good Neighbors. We love you. We will miss Buffalo.”
