Chris Noth is brushing off backlash after a viral social media moment involving his Sex and the City costar Sarah Jessica Parker.
The actor, 71, sparked chatter online after responding to a fan comment on a Friday, January 9, Instagram post. Noth had shared a gym selfie with the caption, “F*** new years – LETS GO!!!!” when a follower referenced Parker’s recent honor, writing, “You mean f*** sjp & her award right? lol.” Noth replied with a simple, “Right,” which quickly made waves among fans of the franchise.
Now, Noth is making it clear he doesn’t see the exchange as a big deal. In a Wednesday, January 14, Instagram post, the actor addressed the situation head-on, calling the moment overblown.
“My off-the-cuff slightly sarcastic response to a comment on the internet seems to have caused a tempest in a teapot,” Noth wrote, alongside a headshot of himself.
He added, “It is not news. It is not worth all this discussion. It is a waste of time in a world there are more important things to worry about.”
The comment came days after Parker, 60, was honored with the Carol Burnett Award at the Golden Globes on Tuesday, January 6 — a career achievement accolade celebrating excellence in television. While Noth didn’t mention Parker by name in his clarification, fans quickly connected the dots, especially given the duo’s long and complicated Sex and the City history.
Noth famously portrayed Mr. Big opposite Parker’s Carrie Bradshaw throughout the original HBO series and its films. However, his involvement with the franchise ended on a controversial note. Although Mr. Big died in the premiere episode of the Sex and the City revival And Just Like That…, Noth had filmed a later scene with Parker that was intended to appear in the season 1 finale. That scene never aired.
In December 2021, multiple allegations of sexual assault against Noth surfaced, leading to the decision to cut his appearance from the show. At the time, TV Line reported that while Noth and Parker filmed scenes together in Paris, the footage would “not make it to air.”
Two women accused Noth of sexual assault in a report published by The Hollywood Reporter. One alleged she met the actor in 2004 when she was 22, while another said she met him in 2015 at age 25. Noth, who has been married to Tara Wilson since 2012, denied the allegations.
“These stories could’ve been from 30 years ago or 30 days ago — no always means no — that is a line I did not cross,” he said at the time. “I did not assault these women.”
A third woman later came forward with similar claims, which Noth also denied. His representative stated, “The story is a complete fabrication, and the alleged accounts detailed throughout read like a piece of bad fiction.”
Noth has never been investigated or charged.
