Avatar: Fire and Ash easily took the Christmas holiday weekend, bringing in $88 million over the four day weekend since Christmas on Thursday. Despite debuting to a lower opening weekend number than its predecessor, the film had a better second weekend hold, with $64 million over the true weekend.
Repeat success story Zootopia 2 enjoyed the second spot at the box office, with $25.2 over the long weekend and $20 million over the true weekend.
But newcomer Marty Supreme was right at its heels, bringing in $27.1 million over the long weekend and $17.4 million over the true weekend, outpacing many of its predictions, for a total take of $28.3 million after one weekend of limited and one weekend of wide release. It’s the second biggest weekend debut for A24 after Civil War‘s $25 million.
The fourth spot was taken by The Housemaid in its second weekend, with $15.4 million over the weekend and $18.9 million through Christmas. This represented a great hold for the film.
The big studio meta-reboot Anaconda brought in $14.6 million over the weekend and $23.7 million since Christmas. It’s gotten mixed reviews, for a 51% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and audiences.
New release Song Sung Blue came in eighth place, with $7.6 million over the weekend and $12 million through the four day weekend.
