Zootopia 2 is having a great weekend, as the animated sequel retook the top spot at the box office with $26.3 million, bringing it to a $259 million domestic total. It also passed the $1 billion mark at the global box office to reach $1.13 billion, only the second film to do so this year.
Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 fell off dramatically in its second weekend, sliding 70% for a $19.5 million take, for a total of $95 million domestic and $173 million worldwide . But because it had a reasonable $36 million budget, and a great first weekend at the box office, the film will be a win for Blumhouse.
In third spot was Wicked: For Good with $8.5 million, a 51% drop from last weekend. While it opened bigger than the first film, this sequel will end up making less at the box office overall, with a current take of $312 million domestically and $467 million worldwide.
Everything else at the box office made less than $3 million. Now You See Me: Now You Don’t brought in $2.3 million for fourth place, while Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution came in fifth with $2.1 million.
Newcomer Ella McCay bellyflopped with a $2.1 million take in 2500 theaters, one of the worst openings for Disney in recent history. Meanwhile, Hamnet continues to expand, reaching 749 theaters this weekend and making $1.5 million, for a total of $7 million over its three weekends of platformed release.
Next weekend should be much better for box office prospects, as Avatar: Fire and Ash, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants and The Housemaid are all set to open wide.
