Maxton Hall—The World Between Us stars Harriet Herbig-Matten and Damian Hardung teased that their characters’ romance is about to get spicier than ever in the remainder of season 2 during an exclusive interview with Life & Style.

Before the season 2 finale airs on Prime Video on Friday, November 28, Herbig-Matten, 22, and Hardung, 27, reflected on their characters’ Ruby and James hot and heavy dynamic once they decided to give their relationship a real try.

When asked to tease the upcoming episodes, both Herbig-Matten and Hardung agreed that things will get “spicy” between James and Ruby. “It’s getting spicy in the beginning of episode 5,” Herbig-Matten said, noting that their characters were in the middle of a passionate kiss before James’ father, Mortimer (Fedja van Huêt), returned to the family’s home.

During episode 6, Mortimer ended up storming in on the couple and stopping them from going much further than kissing. “They’ve always been interrupted. So it’d be interesting to see if that happens one more time,” Hardung said of James and Ruby’s attempts to take their relationship to the next level.

Another topic the actors touched on was what they thought the most surprising moment of season 2 was so far. “I did not see the car crash [coming],” Hardung said of the moment in the season 2 premiere, which showed James crashing his car after a heated fight with Mortimer. “That was definitely something. It was not on my bucket list.”

“The car crash was really surprising,” Herbig-Matten agreed.

While Maxton Hall is a German show, the series has earned a loyal international fan base. During the interview with Life & Style, the actors also shared their real thoughts about fans’ intense reactions to their characters’ decisions.

“The fun part is, like, because they are so invested in a character, and they know the character so well, at a certain point they start questioning your choices,” Hardung said about the fans’ thoughts regarding storylines. “Which is great because you’re suddenly in that realm of, you know, having a discussion. They’re like, ‘Why would you do that? James would do something different.’ You were like, ‘I’m sorry. I mean, I played this character for like, one and a half years. I think I know.’”

Hardung added that some fans have had “good ideas” for where the storylines should go, adding that fan theories have created a “whole world” that expands outside of the show.

One storyline that many fans had opinions about was when James kissed another girl during the season 2 premiere. “Episode one was really dividing fans’ opinions of whether there’s any way to justify what James did and not,” Hardung said. “I feel like that conversation really speaks to a lot of moral standards that we have or about cultural upbringing. Are there differences that can think across borders as well? And to have that conversation is also really interesting.”

Season 1 follows Ruby after she wins a scholarship to Maxton Hall, which is a step in her dream to ultimately attend Oxford University. After she uncovers a shocking secret, she gets thrown into the life of classmate James. Season 2, which is currently airing on Prime Video, sees the couple trying to pursue their relationship despite many obstacles.
