Minka Kelly stopped by The Drew Barrymore Show on Wednesday, November 19 where she opened up to host Drew Barrymore about her relationship with Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds and how it all began.

Kelly shared that a mutual friend had encouraged the two to connect. Before they even met face-to-face, she and her now-boyfriend spent time texting and FaceTiming while she was abroad for work.

During one of those early conversations, Kelly casually mentioned, “What a crazy day — I just turned in the final pages of my book.”

His response surprised her. “He said, ‘I want to read it,’” she recalled. “So I sent it to him. I told him, ‘You’ll either be terrified and run for the hills, or you’ll see the beauty in all of it.’”

Fortunately, he saw the beauty. “He was the latter, and it brought us even closer,” she said.

Barrymore chimed in with her own reflection: “God, if we could all hand someone a dossier about our lives, how amazing would that be?”

The candid conversation came on the heels of Kelly’s awkward appearance on the Today show the day prior, where Jenna Bush Hager tried to bring up Kelly’s boyfriend.

Kelly was on the morning show Tuesday, November 18 promoting her new Netflix holiday film Champagne Problems.

After chatting about the movie, Bush Hager attempted to pivot. “Speaking about the holidays and love and this rom-com, you have a very big love in your life right now,” she said before asking Kelly to talk about her relationship “if you feel comfortable.”

Kelly grew noticeably uneasy, but Bush Hager continued, referencing a birthday tribute Kelly posted, “You wrote that he healed wounds he didn’t inflict. That’s beautiful.”

“It is beautiful,” Kelly replied. “I feel very lucky — he’s a really good guy.”

Sensing Kelly’s hesitation, Bush Hager finally backed off. “Okay, sounds like you don’t want to talk about it — that’s fine,” she said.
