The second installment of the Wicked films had a magical weekend at the box office, bringing in $150 million for the largest opening of a Broadway adaptation ever. It’s also the second biggest opening for the year, right behind Minecraft‘s $162 million this spring. Wicked: For Good also brought in $76 million internationally, for a total of $226 million globally. Critics are mixed on the film, but audiences gave it an A Cinemascore.
As for other new releases, Rental Family grabbed the fifth place spot with $3.3 million in just under 2000 theaters. The film, which received an A Cinemascore and good reviews, will need to drum up more of an audience over the holiday weekend to stick around in theaters for long.
Sisu 2 came in 6th place with $2.6 million, less than estimates and the opening weekend take of the first film.
In second place was Now You See Me 3, falling 56% from its opening weekend to a $9.1 million take. It’s made $36.8 million domestically, but has a huge overseas audience, so its total take is already $146 million on a $90 million budget.
Third place went to Predator: Badlands in its third weekend, making $6.5 million and bringing its total to $76 million domestically and $159.6 million worldwide. The film’s budget was $105 million.
In fourth place was The Running Man in its second weekend of release, bringing in $6.1 million for a total of $27 million domestic and $48.3 million internationally on a $110 million budget.
