Investigative journalist Kristin Thorne is spearheading a new crime series, Uncovered With Kristin Thorne, that gives true crime fans an inside look into cases impacting families and communities across the country.
Through her reporting, Thorne sets out to uncover what others overlook by highlighting forgotten voices and pushing investigative journalism into powerful new formats.
Thorne, a trailblazing 5x-Emmy Award-winning journalist with 20 years in the field, always sets out to tell stories that can “help people” by giving them hope in the face of tragedy.
As Thorne digs deeper into true crime stories, she is determined to help victims of crime and their families by elevating their voices through her series.

Thorne first realized her passion for helping victims tell their stories in 2021. At the time, she was covering the disappearance of Gabby Petito as the lead reporter on the case for ABC. While attending a press conference with a crowd of other reporters, Thorne recalled Gabby’s father, Joe Petito, looking at the media and urging them to do a better job of covering all missing persons cases.
The moment gave Thorne “goosebumps,” and ultimately inspired her to step up her game.
Following Petito’s comments, Thorne was inspired to search “Missing People in the US” on Google and was shocked to learn just how many people have gone missing without leaving any hints of their whereabouts. Thorne eventually created a series dedicated to finding missing people called Missing, which debuted on Hulu only a few months later.
Missing aired for three seasons as Thorne pushed herself to investigate crime in more thoughtful and impactful ways. She left no stone unturned in trying to find the missing people she was featuring.
She spoke to law enforcement while also holding them accountable for their investigations, pushed forward with leads that others had ignored, and even confronted those she believed to be responsible for those disappearances.
While Thorne’s passion for true crime requires an incredible amount of work and research, she knows that, as a journalist, helping victims’ families comes with great responsibility.
Through Uncovered With Kristin Thorne, she will leverage McClatchy’s expansive network of local newsrooms to cover true crime stories in a rigorous, empathetic and impactful way.

“I will not choose fiction over truth, no matter how uncomfortable or inconvenient,” she said.
Through Uncovered With Kristin Thorne will “peel back the layers of crime to discover not just what happened, but why it matters,” Thorne said. The series will also examine how people confront injustice, how institutions succeed or fail, and how resilience can emerge from tragedy and heartbreak.
“Launching Uncovered with Kristin Thorne is a dream I’ve worked toward my entire career,” Thorne said. “I hope you’ll join me – and us – on this journey.”
