Here’s a synopsis: “The film follows Grace (Lawrence) and her partner Jackson (Pattinson), who have recently moved into an old house deep in the country. With ambitions to write The Great American Novel, Grace settles into her new environment, and the couple welcome a baby soon after. However, with Jackson frequently – and suspiciously – absent, and the pressures of domestic life starting to weigh on her, Grace begins to unravel, leaving a path of destruction in her wake.”
Now, critics and audiences are weighing in on the movie.
The movie currently has a 78% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Atlantic says: “Lawrence is superb at exemplifying Grace’s confusion. She alternates fluidly between domestic tranquility and feral rage, often in the same scene. Even as Grace’s grasp on reality seems to slip, her turbulence comes off as entirely natural.”
AP gives it 2.5 out of 4, writing: “There’s plenty to admire in Ramsay’s uncompromising and delirious portrait of marital hell, particularly in the bracingly raw performance of Lawrence. The abandon with which she throws herself into the role is enough to make you exclaim Mother!”
NPR writes: “The storytelling is too abstract and at a remove to fully lock in emotionally, and as Grace’s descent takes unsurprising turns, I was reminded of other, more successful works conveying this delicate subject matter.”
Rolling Stone says: “Even those who think Die My Love courts indulgence and incoherence to its own detriment will gape in awe at how Lawrence makes them feel this person coming apart at the seams.”
The Washington Post gives it 2.5 out of 4, writing: “An astonishing lead performance by Jennifer Lawrence keeps Lynne Ramsay’s Die My Love from falling apart — which is ironic, given that the new film depicts her ripping at the seams.”
