The Plaza Hotel’s most mischievous resident is officially checking back in! Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is bringing Eloise back to life in a brand-new live-action movie for Netflix — and she’s teaming up with none other than Ryan Reynolds to make it happen.
When Was It Confirmed?
The Eloise movie news broke on November 3, 2025, when The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Sherman-Palladino will co-write and direct the live-action adaptation, with Reynolds producing and starring in the project. His production company, Maximum Effort, will team up with MRC for the new family adventure.
According to the outlet, Reynolds will also appear in the movie as an “original villainous character.”
The Eloise series, first published in 1955 by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight, has charmed generations of readers with its whimsical tales of a little girl growing up in one of New York’s most glamorous hotels. The books inspired two 2003 made-for-TV movies — Eloise at the Plaza and Eloise at Christmastime — starring Sofia Vassilieva as Eloise and Julie Andrews as her kind-hearted nanny.
Who’s in the Cast?
The film stars newcomer Mae Schenk as Eloise, the spirited six-year-old who lives in the “tippy-top floor” of New York City’s Plaza Hotel with her nanny, pug Weenie, and turtle Skipperdee. No other casting announcements have been made at this time.
Sherman-Palladino is co-writing the script with Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton, and production is officially set to begin this month.
When Does It Come Out?
Netflix hasn’t announced a release date yet, but with production starting this month, fans could likely see Eloise make her grand return to The Plaza sometime in late 2026 or early 2027.
What Have the Creators Said?
Netflix is clearly excited about the project. “Eloise has been beloved for generations, from when she was first published in the 1950s through to today, when no family trip to New York City is complete without a stop at The Plaza,” said Hannah Minghella, Netflix’s head of feature animation and family film. “It’s an honor to reintroduce this cherished character to the world with two people who share her signature mischief and charm — Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds — in this bold, hilarious, and heartfelt new family film.”
Jonathan Golfman and Brye Adler, co-presidents at MRC Film, added, “We’ve been working with the Thompson Estate and Handmade Films for a long time to bring Eloise to fans everywhere, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Maximum Effort, Amy, and Netflix to bring the cherished children’s property to audiences around the world.”
