The end of Stranger Things is near — and Vecna isn’t finished just yet.
Netflix dropped the long-awaited trailer for the fifth and final season of the hit sci-fi horror series on Thursday, October 30 — and it’s packed with emotional moments, demogorgans and a chilling promise that the end is near.
The trailer opens with Finn Wolfhard’s Mike Wheeler voicing the group’s exhaustion, complaining about being “stuck” with “no end in sight.” Viewers are immediately thrust into action as Mike and the gang venture into dark tunnels, desperate to track down Vecna and “end this once and for all.” Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven then bursts onto the screen in full hero mode — sprinting through fields, vaulting over fences (she can fly now?), and confronting Mike with a pointed line: he doesn’t “get to write the ending.”
But it’s Noah Schnapp’s Will Byers who steals the spotlight. In one of the trailer’s most haunting moments, Will is lifted into the air by Vecna himself, who menacingly declares, “William, you are going to help me, one last time.”
According to Netflix’s official synopsis, the new season picks up in the fall of 1987, following Vecna’s mysterious disappearance. “His whereabouts and plans [are] unknown,” the description teases. Meanwhile, the government has placed Hawkins under strict military quarantine and ramped up its hunt for Eleven, forcing her into hiding once again.
“As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread,” the synopsis continues. “The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.”
Speaking with Tudum, Brown, 21, revealed that Eleven is in “training mode” and “a warrior state” when the season begins. “As for her mindset, all she is thinking about is protecting her friends,” Brown explained. “Her friends are her chosen family, so she will do whatever it takes to protect them and we’re going to see that.”
Wolfhard, 22, shared that Mike returns “back in leadership mode,” while Caleb McLaughlin (Lucas) teased that “the stakes are the same as where we left off.” Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin) added that his character is “in a bit of a funk” this time around.
“I think everybody probably is considering the state that Hawkins is in,” Matarazzo said. “It’s getting a little bit harder for the gang to keep all the pieces together. We’re all dealing with the day-to-day issues of what it is to try to keep everybody safe and figure out where Vecna is, while having a lot of unpacked baggage from the events in the previous season.”
The final season of Stranger Things will be split into three releases: Volume 1 premieres November 26 at 8 p.m. ET, followed by Volume 2 on December 25, and the series finale on December 31
