Bruce Springsteen’s new biopic, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere, offers a deeply personal look at the legendary musician’s life during the making of his 1982 album Nebraska—and fans are already asking about the romantic subplot. One character in particular, Faye (Odessa Young), has left viewers wondering: is she real?

The film, which premiered on October 24, follows Jeremy Allen White as Springsteen, exploring the creation of Nebraska, his mental health struggles, and intimate moments from his life. Among the emotional storytelling, Springsteen meets Faye, a waitress and single mother, and sparks a brief but meaningful romance before the album’s release.

Is Faye from ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere’ real?

No, Faye isn’t real. She’s a composite character representing Springsteen’s romantic relationships at the time.

“In ’81 and ’82 it was so hard for him, even when he knows that he should have been with people or was having a great time and was getting everything he needed in a relationship,” writer-director Scott Cooper explained during an October 2025 interview with Exclaim! Magazine.

    Who is Faye based on?

Faye Romano is inspired by several women Springsteen dated in the late 1970s and early 1980s, including model Joyce Hyser. Hyser herself recalled in a 2020 interview with Rediscover the 80s, “Bruce and I were together for almost 5 years. I grew up with him. We are friends to this day.”

After Springsteen and Hyser split, he had a series of shorter relationships that also shaped the character of Faye. In his memoir Born to Run (2016), Springsteen refers to “a lovely 20-year-old girlfriend” from this period, suggesting that Faye Romano draws from multiple failed relationships rather than one individual.

Around the same time, the rock star married his first wife, Julianne Phillips, in 1985 though the pair eventually called it quits. The rocker went on to wed now-wife Patti Scialfa in 1991 and they later welcomed three children together.

“Two years inside of any relationship and it would simply stop,” Springsteen wrote. “As soon as I got close to exploring my frailties, I was gone. You were gone. One pull of the pin, it’d be over and I’d be down the road, tucking another sad ending in my pack. It was rarely the women themselves I was trying to get away from. I had many lovely girlfriends I cared for and who really cared for me. It was what they triggered, the emotional exposure, the implications of a life of commitments and family burdens.… With the end of each affair, I’d feel a sad relief from the suffocating claustrophobia love had brought me.”

Writer-director Scott Cooper also weighed in on Faye’s creation. “Faye (Odessa Young), the film’s fictional girlfriend, who’s a composite drawn from various real-life relationships, gives Bruce a St. Christopher’s medal — which Springsteen happens to wear in real life to this day,” Cooper told Rolling Stone. He added that Springsteen approved of the character, noting, “Scott, I wasn’t a monk. I think what you’re doing is right. It’s about showing the emotional truth about my inability to connect with women that I absolutely should have.”
