Sony’s Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc was the surprise winner of the box office this weekend, taking in $17.2 million domestically. The anime film, which already made $70 million internationally, earned an A Cinemascore from audiences and outpaced expectations. This is the second big win for anime at the box office this year after the massive $70 million opening of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle.
In second place was Black Phone 2, which opened last weekend and was expected to repeat at the top spot, with $13.2 million. So far, it has made $48 million in North America and $80.4 million worldwide, which is great news for Blumhouse after some notable flops this year.
Newcomer Regretting You also did better than expected, slotting in third place with a $12.8 million take, and an additional $10 million overseas. Based on the book by Colleen Hoover, the film had a budget of $30 million and earned a B Cinemascore.
The Bruce Springsteen biopic Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere came in fourth place with $9.1 million, which was within estimates but ultimately disappointing, and made less than expected overseas with only $7 million on a $55 million budget. For a recent musician biopic comparison, last year’s A Complete Unknown had a better opening of $11.6 million, and holiday legs that took it to $75 million domestic and $140 million globally, which will clearly not be the case for this film about The Boss.
Tron: Ares completed the top five with $4.7 million in its third weekend of release. It has only pulled in $63 million domestically and $123 million internationally to date.
In other new release news, YouTube based horror film Shelby Oaks made $2.3 million in wide release. And Bugonia, the latest from Yorgos Lanthimos, pulled in $690,000 in limited release, averaging $40.5k per location. It expands into wide release next weekend.
