The Diplomat isn’t going anywhere. After a jaw-dropping Season 3 finale left fans desperate for answers, Netflix has officially renewed the hit political thriller for Season 4 — and there’s plenty to look forward to.

The streaming giant confirmed that Season 4 is in the works, though a release date hasn’t been announced yet. Production is set to begin this fall, and according to series creator and showrunner Debora Cahn, the team is just as excited as fans are to dive back into the world of international diplomacy and personal drama.

“I’m so excited about Season 4. It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Cahn told Tudum. “We get to the end of a season, and I always think, ‘Well, there’s no way that we can do this again.’ And then we dig back into it, and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, we have to keep going.’”

What’s Next for ‘The Diplomat’ Season 4?

As production ramps up, viewers can expect some big changes in the cast lineup. The West Wing alums Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford — who portray President Grace Penn and First Husband Todd Penn — have been promoted to series regulars after their standout performances in Season 3.

“Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus … It’s an insane bag of candy,” Cahn said. “Our expectations were high, and it blew right past them.”

Executive producer Janice Williams also gushed about the new dynamic, telling Tudum that “Bradley was the perfect addition to what is already a dream cast.”

    What Is ‘The Diplomat’ About?

The series follows Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), a skilled U.S. diplomat unexpectedly appointed as ambassador to the United Kingdom amid a global crisis. As she navigates high-stakes political situations and tense international relationships, Kate must also balance her complicated marriage to fellow diplomat Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).

Season 3 pushed Kate into uncharted territory. After the death of the sitting president (Michael McKean), Grace Penn steps in as the new POTUS and quickly zeroes in on the Wylers. Kate finds herself in a powerful new position she never wanted, facing fresh expectations and intense obstacles.

“[Fans] should be worried. There’s plenty to worry about,” Cahn teased. “It can be pretty chilling when you see who takes power and get the sense that they may be horrifically misusing it.”
