Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are both happily married now, but nearly a decade ago, the world couldn’t stop talking about Jelena.
The Only Murders in the Building star and the singer dated on and off from 2010 to 2018, and their relationship was… intense, to say the least. They spoke about each other dramatically in interviews and even documented the highs and lows in their music. Fans famously interpreted Selena’s hit song “Lose You to Love Me” as a dig at Justin, referencing how he reportedly “replaced” her with Hailey Bieber just two months after their split.
Of course, all of that is ancient history now — but fans are convinced that Selena may have dropped a subtle reference to the drama in the Wizards of Waverly Place spinoff, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place. A clip from the episode has been making the rounds on X, sparking intense debate online. Did Selena actually shade Justin Bieber? Or are fans reading way too much into a line that fits perfectly with her character?
In the scene in question, Selena’s character, Alex Russo, is giving advice to her daughter, Billie, about matters of the heart. “And if you really like this guy, you should follow your heart,” Alex says. She then adds, “As someone whose type is bad boys you think you can fix but you can’t, so you end up writing songs about them… I know what I’m talking about.”
7 years later, she’s still shading him? and SHES MARRIED?? WE WILL NEVER BE FREE 😭😭

Unsurprisingly, many viewers immediately linked that line to Selena’s personal life rather than Alex’s. After all, she has (allegedly) written multiple songs about her relationship with Justin, who could certainly be called a former “bad boy.” And, let’s be honest — Alex Russo isn’t exactly known for being a professional songwriter outside the show. It seems like a pretty clever nod to Selena’s own experiences.
That said, the line actually does make sense for Alex as a character. One fan pointed out on X, “Mind you she literally had bad boys exes in the show, and she was in a band.” Another added, “This is Alex Russo this isn’t Selena Gomez y’all need to let it go. Alex got something like four ‘bad boy’ exes in the show and there are episodes where she sings and writes songs because she’s in a band with Justin Russo.”
Unfortunately, some haters online are now mocking Selena for supposedly “obsessing” over Justin or “dissing” him. But in reality, Selena didn’t write the script, and there’s no need to take it that seriously. Fans can relax and just enjoy the show — whether or not they want to read a little meta into her clever character writing.
