Rain Spencer is stepping into the spotlight! The Summer I Turned Pretty breakout is officially leading her own Netflix series, Genuine Fraud, based on the bestselling novel by We Were Liars author E. Lockhart. Not only will Rain star in the project, but she’s also set to executive produce — making this her biggest career move yet.
When Does It Come Out?
Netflix has officially greenlit Genuine Fraud, but a release date has not been announced yet. The show is currently in development with Amazon MGM Studios behind the project, which is aiming to capture the same YA magic that made The Summer I Turned Pretty and We Were Liars massive hits.
The series comes on the heels of TSITP wrapping its third and final season, marking a major new chapter for Rain’s career.
What’s It About?
Genuine Fraud is described as a psychological thriller that follows a social chameleon (played by Spencer) who cleverly reinvents herself to become the best friend of a wealthy heiress. But when her “friend” mysteriously goes missing, she assumes her identity — setting off a twisty, high-stakes story filled with secrets, deception, and unexpected turns.
The series is written and created by Sinead Daly, who fans may recognize from her work on The Summer I Turned Pretty — she wrote the Season 3 episode “The Last Call.” Daly has also worked on Hulu’s Tell Me Lies, Netflix’s upcoming Midnight Sun animated series and other YA favorites.
Who Else Is in the Cast?
Aside from Spencer, no additional casting has been announced yet. Celebrity guest stars and supporting cast members will likely be revealed once production officially begins. Behind the scenes, Daly will serve as showrunner, and Amazon MGM Studios is producing.
E. Lockhart is also involved with the project. Her previous book We Were Liars became a viral TikTok sensation before being adapted into a hit Prime Video series, which she executive produced. That series was renewed for a second season, and her next book, We Fell Apart, is set to be published in November.
Will Rain Spencer Be in the TSITP Movie?
Rain made her mark as Taylor, Belly’s (Lola Tung) outspoken best friend, in The Summer I Turned Pretty. She started as a recurring character in Season 1 before becoming a series regular in Season 2, with Taylor and Steven’s (Sean Kaufman) love story quickly earning its own devoted fanbase.
It’s not yet confirmed if Rain will appear in the recently announced TSITP follow-up movie — but sources say it’s considered likely.
