A Florida man’s remains were found in a pond 10 years after he was reported missing.
The skeletal remains of Steven MacKrell were found on October 2 at 7:20 p.m, according to a statement from Sunshine State Sonar. According to the private company’s website, they provide specialized underwater services to find missing persons.
MacKrell’s remains were found more than 10 years after he went missing at age 25 on July 30, 2015.
The statement explained that the search team found MacKrell’s submerged white Ford Fusion and his remains in a pond in Boca Raton near Interstate 95. “This search was a collaborative effort with the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and the Boca Raton Police Services Department. Without the hard work and incredible efforts of both agencies, this case would not have been resolved,” Sunshine State Sonar said.

“May Steven’s loved ones find strength and comfort during this challenging time,” the statement continued.
The Boca Raton Police Services Department (BRPD) explained in a statement of their own that its dive team was called in to “help recover the vehicle from a lake with the remains inside” after Sunshine State Sonar’s discovery, per People.
“Our dive team was able to help bring the vehicle out of the water and retrieve Mackrell’s skeletal remains, which were turned over to the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner,” Boca Raton police stated.

“Sunshine State Sonar’s discovery will help the Fort Lauderdale Police Department’s (FLPD) continued investigation into Mackrell’s disappearance and death,” BRPD continued. “This collaboration between Sunshine State Sonar, FLPD and BRPD shows how productive teamwork between law enforcement and community partners can be, and we are proud to have been of help in this decade-long investigation.”
Additionally, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) said in an additional press release that they “provided Mackrell’s dental records to the Boca Raton Police Services Department and the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office,” according to People.
“Using those records, the medical examiner confirmed the remains were positively identified as belonging to Mackrell,” Fort Lauderdale police said.
According to Sunshine State Sonar, MacKrell was last seen leaving Lucky’s Tavern in downtown Fort Lauderdale around 1:30 a.m. He then bought snacks at a Valero gas station, while the search team said he was expected to meet up with friends later that night.
The investigation into how MacKrell and his car ended up in a lake are still under investigation as of time of publication.
