Your favorite romantasy book is coming to your TV screen soon. That’s right, Prime Video is adapting Rebecca Yarros’s bestselling Fourth Wing series, a #BookTok sensation since its 2023 debut. Fans have been eagerly awaiting news about the show, and now there’s a lot to unpack about the adaptation, from casting to release details.
When Was the Show Confirmed?
In October 2023, Prime Video announced that it had secured the rights to Yarros’s entire Empyrean series and was developing a TV adaptation with Michael B. Jordan’s production company, Outlier Society.
Deadline reported that Amazon MGM Studios had also acquired the rights for the full series, paving the way for a high-profile fantasy series filled with dragons and adventure. Yarros herself has been involved as an executive producer.
Who’s In the Cast?
While no official casting announcements have been made, Yarros has emphasized that the casting process will be handled by the show’s staff, not her. Speaking at an event in London on August 30, 2024, she explained her approach:
“I will never say who my perfect fan cast is because the cast is so diverse, and I want to open that up to more diversity,” she said. “And I feel like the second I say who I think this character is, that’s who everyone will accept. That’s only who they will accept.”
She added, “I kinda hope they find, like, an up-and-coming generation, but I would never put my fan cast in your heads.”
Although Yarros won’t select actors herself, she does have one firm casting request: “They know how staunch I am against whitewashing Xaden,” she said. “I think that’s the biggest thing.”
When’s It Coming Out?
As of now, Prime Video has not announced an official release date for the Fourth Wing TV show. Fans can expect updates once the new showrunner is finalized and production ramps up, but anticipation is already building for this fantasy adaptation.
Who’s Behind the Scenes?
The show has seen some changes in its creative team. Moira Walley-Beckett was originally tapped as showrunner and executive producer in July 2023 but has since departed the project. In July 2025, Deadline reported that Jac Schaeffer—the creator behind Agatha All Along and WandaVision—is in talks with Amazon MGM Studios to join as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.
“They’re an absolutely incredible team and I can’t wait to see the adaptation of Fourth Wing brought to life!” Yarros wrote on Instagram in 2023. “I have all the faith in the world in them. And, I get to executive produce too! Words can’t portray just how excited I am.”
What’s the Story About?
For anyone new to the world of Fourth Wing, the story follows Violet Sorrengail, a small, underestimated young woman with a chronic condition similar to Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. She enrolls at Basgiath War College, an elite academy where dragons meet their riders. Violet trains alongside other riders, bonds with two dragons, and meets the brooding Xaden Riorson, already bonded to the dragon Sgaeyl. Together, they prepare for war threatening their homeland of Navarre while navigating tension and high-stakes romance.
