Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle was predicted to win the weekend, but it absolutely destroyed estimates with a $70 million take. This is the biggest box office haul for an anime film by more than double, besting 1999’s Pokémon: The First Movie – Mewtwo Strikes Back, and Sony’s biggest opening domestically in over two years. The film has already made more than $300 million internationally.
Dropping a staggering 69% in its second weekend, The Conjuring: Last Rites was still good for second place at the box office with $26.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $131 million overall.
Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale brought in $18.1 million, which is more than the opening weekend for the last installment in the series in 2022. The majority of the audience was older white women, and counterprogramming for that demo was nonexistent.
In fourth place was Lionsgate’s The Long Walk, which opened to $11.5 million on a fairly lean $20 million budget. This Stephen King adaptation did much better box office than the one from earlier this year, The Life of Chuck, which made less than $10 million worldwide over its whole run.
Rounding out the top five was Disney’s re-release of Toy Story, which made $3.5 million.
Other box office debuts included Spinal Tap: The End Continues with $1.7 million, and The History of Sound in four theaters with $85k.
