The Conjuring: Last Rites was expected to lead the weekend, but wildly outperformed expectations with a best-in-franchise $83 million dollar domestic opening. While box office numbers have been weak for the latter half of the summer, horror has continued to do extraordinarily well overall this year.

Coming in second place was the pro-shot of Hamilton, which brought in $10 million after being available on Disney+ for five years. It was not marketed as a sing-along, but an intro video encouraged singing, so audience member expectations and reality may not have aligned, depending on what kind of viewing they were after.

Weapons is finally slowing down a bit after a full month of release, bringing in $5.37 millon for a total of $143 million domestically and $251 million worldwide, and coming in third place for the weekend.

In fourth place was Freakier Friday, which pulled in $3.8 million in its fifth weekend, and $87 million domestically so far.

Last week’s debut films Caught Stealing and The Roses crashed and burned in their second weekend, both dropping over 50% and bringing in $3.2 million and $2.8 million, respectively.
