Golden love is back — and this season, a brand-new leading man is ready to find “the one.”
ABC has officially unveiled the cast of The Golden Bachelor season 2, and 66-year-old Mel Owens is stepping into the spotlight. Three weeks before the September 24 premiere, fans are getting their first look at the women competing for the retired NFL star-turned-lawyer’s heart.
Mel’s casting was revealed back in April, and unlike other Bachelor spinoffs, producers skipped the usual tradition of promoting a former contestant. Instead, they brought in an entirely fresh face — and his journey to love is already setting the stage for plenty of excitement.
The Michigan native first made a name for himself on the football field, playing linebacker for the Los Angeles Rams throughout the 1980s. After nearly a decade in the NFL, he shifted gears, earning his Series 7 License and working as a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch. Never one to slow down, Mel later pursued law, graduating from the University of California at San Francisco – Hastings School of Law, and eventually becoming a founding partner at his Orange County firm, Namanny, Byrne and Owens. His focus? Helping professional athletes with workers’ compensation cases.
But while his résumé is impressive, Mel insists he’s looking for something far simpler now: companionship. According to ABC, the divorced dad is “ready to rediscover a love rooted in the simple joys of companionship – sharing life’s everyday moments, making plans for the future, and growing stronger together as a couple.” The network added, “He’s eager to meet someone who shares this vision and finally find that perfect teammate he’s been waiting for in his golden years.”
Outside of his career, Mel’s proudest role has always been being a father to the two sons he shares with his ex-wife. Coaching their sports teams and being a present parent defined much of his life after football — and now, he’s ready to bring that same dedication to a new relationship.
The announcement comes on the heels of the show’s headline-making first season, where Gerry Turner found love — and quickly heartbreak — with winner Theresa Nist. The couple tied the knot in a live TV wedding in January 2024, but just three months later, they announced their split on Good Morning America.
