September will see a few exciting new additions to HBO Max, but while you wait for Task with Mark Ruffalo to drop on September 7, there’s plenty of good content there for your enjoyment already.

There’s a new season of Rick and Morty, a spinoff of Naked and Afraid, and a disturbing true crime docuseries about the dark side of Mormon influencer culture.

Check out Watch With Us’ recommendations for the HBO Max shows you must watch in September 2025.

‘Rick and Morty’ (2013-Present, Season 8 now streaming)

Wubba lubba dub dub! The full eighth season of Rick and Morty is now on HBO Max. While season 7, the first since cocreator Justin Roiland left the show due to abuse allegations, received a 77 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, season 8 currently has a score of 100 percent.

So if you’ve ever been a fan, now’s a good time to get back on the Rick and Morty bandwagon for more whacky, raunchy, spacefaring shenanigans.

Drama, comedy, documentaries and much more — whatever kind of shows you love to watch, HBO Max probably has plenty of them. August 2025 will feature the return of James Gunn‘s Peacemaker, as well as a new docuseries about Billy Joel. Watch With Us is also recommending that fans revisit a beloved Lena Dunham comedy series […]

    ‘Naked and Afraid: Apocalypse’ (2025)

Survivalists face the elements — with not even clothes on their backs? Actually, that’s old news. In Naked and Afraid: Apocalypse, they’re not facing the regular elements. Instead, they’re facing a Mad Max-style scorched wasteland, where anything can be a threat — from elephants (yes, seriously), electrical storms and challenges. Who will be the ultimate survivor? (Or, since Survivor is a different show, maybe we should ask who will end the season with the most clothing and the least fear?)

Reality TV is like candy — it’s not always the most healthy thing you can consume, but when it comes to addictions, you could certainly do worse. Plus, sometimes reality gets a bad rap. After all, the shows on Netflix range from the frothiest of dating shows, like Love Is Blind, to more culturally-minded series, like […]

‘Ruby & Jodi: A Cult of Sin and Influence’ (2025)

For the true crime fans, Ruby & Jodi is a terrifying examination of how two women — mom influencer Ruby Franke and therapist Jodi Hildebrandt — connected through the online Mormon influencer community and gained increasing power and influence. Featuring extensive interviews with former clients, the docuseries underscores the extent of Hildebrandt’s cult-like and manipulative tactics.

Hildebrandt’s niece, Jessi Hildebrandt, the docuseries underscores Hildebrandt’s manipulative and dangerous tendencies and how, when combined with Franke’s strict family values, they created an environment rife with manipulation, control, and abuse. A disturbing and fascinating doc about a perfect storm of toxic “self-help” culture online.

From Sherri Papini‘s kidnapping hoax to the two separate documentaries about Scott Peterson‘s murder conviction, it’s safe to say that most streaming services are investing in true crime in 2024. Netflix and Hulu usually corner the genre by focusing on the most recent — and most surprising — cases. It was Investigation Discovery, however, that […]
