This weekend brought several new wide releases, but all of them underperformed Weapons in its fourth weekend, which made $10.2 million this weekend and an estimated $12.4 million through Monday. It’s made $134.6 million domestic and $250 globally so far on a budget of $38 million, making it a massive hit for Warner Bros.
In second was the Jaws re-release, which pulled in $8.1 million over the weekend and will close in on $10 million by Monday. Known as one of the first major summer blockbusters, it was re-released in 3,200 theaters, giving audiences who love the film and folks who have never seen it a chance to catch it on the big screen.
Caught Stealing pulled into third place, making $7.8 million over the weekend and an estimated $9.5 million through Monday. The crime thriller, starring Austin Butler and Zoë Kravitz and directed by Darren Aronofsky, had a budget of $40 million, so the studio was likely hoping for more from its first weekend out.
In fourth place was Freakier Friday, pulling in $6.5 million through the traditional weekend and $8.3 million through the holiday. This just edges out the new release of The Roses, which made $6.3 million, and is projected to take in $8 million through Monday. That film was based on The War of the Roses, which had considerably more box office success in its day.
In indie news, The Toxic Avenger premiered with $1.7 million, and Splitsville continued in limited release run with a $6k per theater average, bringing its total gross to $318k.
