Crumbl co-founder Sawyer Hemsley came out as gay this week amid intense speculation on social media and now some of his past comments are resurfacing.
Sawyer was outed by gay influencers on social media, who called him out for allegedly presenting as a straight man and for potentially voting against the rights of the LGBTQ community (though that has not been confirmed).
An interview from September 2024 has resurfaced and Sawyer talked about his dating life, specifically about his experiences with women.

Sawyer appeared on Josie Van Dyke’s podcast and talked about being lonely in his 30s as he has been hesitant to make new friends amid his success with Crumbl.
“A lot of people on you know Instagram, friend me and I’m like that’s awesome but then a lot of the times it’s just to get something and so I’m just really reserved with having friends honestly, because I just feel like sometimes it looks like a facade and then they really just want a donation free cookies, they want to open a store, they’re trying to get me on a podcast for somebody else,” Sawyer said. “Friendship’s been kind of hard. Especially like, I had to sacrifice you know my social life to build this thing. I kept a few friends along the way, lost a lot of friends, and then trying to make new friends in your 30s is really hard in Utah. You think it’d be easy but I don’t think it’s easy.”
Sawyer said he used to be an extrovert and loved to chit-chat with people, but ever since his Crumbl success, he’s been more “reserved.”
“I’ve learned to love being alone. It’s crazy. I love it. A lot of people say, ‘Hey are you ever going to get married?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t know.’ I love my routine, I love being able to go when I want, pick up and spend money where I want, do whatever I want, it’s so freeing. I just feel so independent,” Sawyer said.
Sawyer noted that in Utah there are “all these people struggling with their marriages” and that he “can get married later on.”
Sawyer was then asked if he’s ever been in love.
“That’s a great question. I don’t know if I have,” Sawyer said.
He was then asked if he’s ever had a serious girlfriend. He responded, “I’ve had a few that I felt like… there was one, like my second or third year of Crumbl, I remember walking into her and I’m like, ‘I think I’m gonna marry this chick.’ I was like maybe 29. It was a couple years ago.”
Sawyer was thinking about proposing and said he was going to make it “Crumbl themed proposal” with a “food truck and music.”
“This was me being like, ‘Yeah, let’s go for it.’ Because I don’t know, I was jiving with this girl and anyway, we went on a cruise and broke up a couple weeks later,” Sawyer said, adding that he never bought an engagement ring.
Sawyer said he was “attracted” to the girl. “This might sound selfish, but if I don’t have like 98% attraction to somebody, I’m out… I’ve gotta feel drawn to this person.”
Sawyer said that he’s attracted to “natural beauty, somebody that doesn’t try too hard, and the obviously the personality and passion for going out and doing your own thing, being driven.”
He ended up admitting that “maybe I don’t know what love really feels like with somebody… I’ve never said ‘I love you.’ I’ve never been in a relationship where I’ve said ‘I love you’ because I’ve always been very careful.”
Sawyer was asked if he’s a “serial dater,” but he said that he actually “hates dating.”
“I just think it’s a lot of work. Especially in Utah. It’s such a game, like they’re talking to 12 million other people,” Sawyer said.
When asked how he meets people, Sawyer said that he’s not on dating apps and just meets people through “DMs on Instagram.” He said it’s a “mix” of him sliding into DMs and others sliding into his messages.
“I think it’s more, I’m getting more DMs than I am sending, because I’m not really trying,” Sawyer said. “I kind of told myself, if it comes, it comes.”
Sawyer said he’s attracted to younger people. He said, “If they want to open a business or do that type of thing, I love that. Because it’s more than just staying at home, taking care of the kids, or just being a housewife. I think we both should chase our passions and our dreams and support each other.”
Sawyer was asked if he’d feel “insecure if a woman outdid you.”
“No. I thought I would, but I think that’s cool because then I have my thing, she has her thing, and I think that’s totally cool,” he said.
Sawyer often shares shirtless photos on his Instagram page and has claimed that he still eats Crumbl cookies almost every day.
