Giada De Laurentiis is reacting to the talk about her pronunciation of Italian words.
“Honestly, I moved here in elementary school from Rome. I really didn’t speak any English and I flunked the first grade. I couldn’t practice at home because my parents insisted that we speak Italian,” the former Food Network chef shared in an Instagram post.
“Everything was about Italian food and culture in my house, so when I started on Food Network, it didn’t occur to me to not pronounce those words correctly. Also my family probably would’ve killed me if I hadn’t pronounced them the right way, the way they had taught me,” she said.

Words like “ricotta” and all the traditional pasta shape pronunciations like “spaghetti” always have an Italian flare when Giada says them out loud. She did a segment on proper pronunciations on Conan a while back!
“It really surprised me, and it still surprises me, the emotion that it elicits out of people who watch my shows. I get asked all the time to pronounce words and dishes — it’s hilarious to me,” Giada added. “It was that simple. I really didn’t think much about it at the time.”
