Though Netflix does not release box office estimates for its rare theatrical releases, other studios estimate that its film Kpop Demon Hunters won the box offce this weekend with an $18 million debut over showings on Saturday and Sunday. The film was released on Netflix back on June 20th, but has gained a ton of popularity since its release, vaulting several of its songs onto Billboard charts and making it one of Netflix’s most watched films of all time. This popularity made it a good candidate for a “sing along” theatrical release, many showings of which were sold out.
In second place was Weapons, falling from its top spot the last couple of weekends, with a $15.6 million take. The film has grossed $115.9 million domestically and $199 million globally, which means it’s already a huge hit on its $38 million budget.
Freakier Friday came in third with $9.1 million, earning $70 million in North America and $113 million globally to date. It’s not doing as well as the original film.
In fourth place was The Fantastic Four: First Steps with $5.9 million in its fifth weekend of release. It has only made $257 million in North America and $490 million worldwide, which is a lot for some movies but below expectations for a superhero film.
And in fifth place was The Bad Guys 2, once again taking the fifth place spot with $5.1 million.
Most of the new releases of the weekend didn’t fare so well. Honey, Don’t was in eighth place with a $3 million take, while Eden pulled in just over $1 million in 600+ theaters.
