Corey Mylchreest and Sofia Carson are starring in the new Netflix movie My Oxford Year, and it’s already shot up to No 1 on the streamer in just one day across the world!

The movie follows Anna (Carson), an ambitious young American woman, who sets out for Oxford University to fulfill a childhood dream. She has her life completely on track until she meets a charming and clever local, Jamie (Mylchreest), who profoundly alters both of their lives.

While the movie is based on the novel of the same name by Julia Whelan, the ending is different than the book.

Corey and Sofia recently opened up about the movie’s differing ending.

In the book, Jamie gets more time after getting pneumonia and a medical trial that gives him more time, and at the end of the movie, Anna is at his bedside as he passes away.

“It’s better like that,” Corey says, via EW. “It’s more powerful. That is the direction that the book is heading in, and it would feel like hypocrisy for Jamie to speak all these things and for Anna to be understanding that philosophy of life [and not end there].”

“The impressive thing is that Jamie believes all of these things — forever is composed of nows — and he doesn’t have that many nows left,” he continued. “So, what’s really amazing is that he’s doing all of this stuff and believes all these things with really not that much time left. If that wasn’t true, it would feel like we’re undervaluing his beliefs.”

Sofia, who is also an executive producer on the movie, notes that the ending was left a little up in the air on purpose.

“Even though it’s clear Anna’s alone at the end,” she said. “We left it a little bit ambiguous because we wanted the film to end with hope and with light.”
