American Eagle is breaking its silence on the controversial new jeans ad starring Sydney Sweeney.
Last week, the denim brand launched their Fall 2025 campaign, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” however, in some ads, “Jeans” has been crossed out and replaced with “Genes.”
Many accused American Eagle of promoting “eugenics” and “Nazi propaganda,” since Sydney, 27, is white, blonde, and blue-eyed. People also took issue with the campaign seemingly sexualizing the Euphoria actress and in one commercial, she says, “Eyes up here.”
In a new statement, American Eagle responded to the backlash and defended the new campaign.

The rep went on to say that their independent polling found that 71% of respondents thought the new campaign was appealing.
“The bottom line is that this was about creating a great pair of jeans and supporting a very worthy cause through some of the proceeds going to domestic violence prevention,” the AE rep continued. “Anything beyond that is noise that is not registering with the average person.”
“Regardless of how people feel about the ad, we hope they can agree we should be doing more to support and empower those who are experiencing domestic violence,” the rep concluded.
