The I Know What You Did Last Summer producer is revealing why this actor from the original 1997 film didn’t return for the 2025 installment.

Ryan Phillippe played the role of Barry Cox in the original movie, but the 50-year-old actor didn’t return for the latest installment. According to the producer, that isn’t just because Ryan‘s character, Barry Cox, was killed at the beginning of the first movie.

Producer Neal H. Moritz shared the reason he wasn’t brought back for the movie – and whether or not he might appear in a future sequel.

Neal spoke to PEOPLE and revealed that the reason they didn’t find a way to give Ryan a cameo was because the movie already had so much going on.

“It just got to be too much. We have a Barry Cox mention. He gets a shout-out. But, yeah, it started to feel like too many ideas. But it is not for a lack of love of Ryan — he is amazing,” Neal told the publication.

He went on to say that there could be a chance to work with him again in the future and said, “And I do think there is a very fun way to integrate Ryan into a sequel that I hope happens.”

If you didn’t know, the author that wrote the novel I Know What You Did Last Summer didn’t like the original movie.
