An open letter signed by over 500 Broadway artists is reprimanding actress Patti Lupone for her “degrading and misogynistic” comments in her recent New Yorker profile and further call for her– and anyone else who uses “their platform to publicly demean, harass, or disparage fellow artists”– to be disinvited from industry events such as the Tony Awards.
The letter addresses the Broadway League, the American Theatre Wing, and “the greater theatre community” and clarifies that it does not seek to cancel anyone but to bring about an awareness of fostering care and respect in the community. It also uses Dan Snyder and Will Smith as examples of their respective “organizations act[ing] swiftly to preserve their values and the integrity of their communities.”
Notable signees are Susan Kelechi Watson, Tony-winner Wendell Pierce, Tony-winner J. Harrison Ghee, Tony-winner James Monroe Iglehart, Tony-winner Maleah Joi Moon, Andy Garcia, and Grammy-nominee Courtney Love
