Lorde shares her & Chappell Roan’s conversation about her gender identity:
“She was like, ‘So, are you nonbinary now?’ And I was like, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.’ There’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up.”

Lorde is currently on the cover of Rolling Stone to promote her new album “Virgin” and in the interview she talks about her gender and how it influenced her new album.
She says she is “in the middle gender-wise”. In a recent conversation with her friend Chappell Roan, Chappell asked her if she was non-binary and Lorde responded “I’m a woman except for the days I’m a man”. “
A pivotal moment came in 2023 when she tried on a pair of men’s jeans and sent a photo to her producer. She also credits going off of birth control saying it caused her to go “off the map of femininity”.
One song on the album called “Man of the Year” she wrote when she was wearing men’s jeans, a gold chain, and duct tape on her chest. She said what she saw in the mirror scared her and “there was violence to it”.
