Who doesn’t love a special little beverage? As spring has slowly gotten warmer I’ve seen more and more people posting themselves making at-home iced tea concoctions, fruity syrups for seltzers, and even ‘loaded’ flavored waters. What has stood out to me from the bunch is a “homemade Gatorade” recipe by the creator @healthylittlepeach, which has gotten millions of views and tons of recreation videos. The allure lies in its “electrolytes” and health benefits. It looked deceivingly simple, and I was curious to see if it actually tasted good or refreshing.
Here’s how I made my own homemade “Gatorade:”
I decided to make mine kiwi-flavored, but you can check out her page to see every fruit featured in “Gatorade,” from strawberry to citrus. I threw 5 kiwis in the blender, a cup and a half of coconut water, a cup of green tea (which I brewed and cooled beforehand with a tea bag), a generous amount of sea salt, the juice of a lime, and a tablespoon of honey. Note: green tea is caffeinated. If you want a caffeine-free option, people suggest subbing it for aloe vera water. I would switch it out with straight-up water or whatever extra coconut water you have. It doesn’t change the flavor much. I opted to throw the kiwis in with the skin on to get the most out of them.

I blended that for a while until fully combined, then ran the mixture through a strainer. I needed to get those kiwi seeds and skin particles out to truly achieve a thin, juice-like consistency rather than a smoothie. This part reminded me of how easy it is to make juice at home without a fancy juicer, but also just how much fruit is required to make such a small amount of juice. I ran it through the strainer one more time until it was thin enough for my liking.

I prepared my cute little serving cup by rimming it with a lime wedge and flaky sea salt. Filled it with iced, poured in the gorgeous green “Gatorade,” and garnished with a little kiwi wedge. It looked a little too much like a margarita. I ended up pouring the rest into a pitcher filled with ice and served it to everyone in the office. It was gone in less than 20 minutes—people loved iced, batched drinks!

Taste-wise, it was subtle and almost vegetal, but had a good balance with the sea salt and honey. I’m indifferent to the supposed health benefits of the drink, but it was definitely refreshing, tasty, and easy to make. No notes! I’d love to try it out with some more adventurous fruit combinations once it gets warmer out.
