TikTok has seemingly been salvaged once again.
On Friday (April 4), President Donald Trump announced that he has delayed the app’s impending ban for a second time. This is because he has extended the deadline for TikTok’s Chinese-based parent company, ByteDance, to find a US partner in order to remain in use in the US.
“My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days,” he added.

“We do not want TikTok to ‘go dark.’ We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he later clarified.
Amazon was reportedly previously in the running to buy TikTok, however, the company’s bid apparently came in a few days before the deadline, making it not a serious contender for the deal (per NBC News).
While NBC News reports that ByteDance has not currently confirmed any plans to sell TikTok to a U.S buyer, Trump is apparently confident in the fate of the app’s US presence.
“We have a lot of potential buyers. There’s tremendous interest in Tiktok. I’d like to see Tiktok remain alive,” he said to reporters last week, according to Reuters.
However, on March 14, Vice President JD Vance acknowledged the complicated nature of the situation.
“We’d like to get it done without the extension. I think the question is, what is the equity ownership of the new joint venture? How do you do the contracts for all the investors, the customers, the service providers?” he told NBC News.
“The deal itself will be very clear, but actually creating those thousands and thousands of pages of legal documents, that’s the one thing that I worry could slip,” he added.
Trump first blocked the TikTok ban in January 2025, even though he initially signed an executive order to prepare a ban on TikTok back in 2020.
