The cast of Outer Banks remains deeply divided, as evidenced by Rudy Pankow unfollowing former costars Madison Bailey and Madelyn Cline – and show sources exclusively tell Life & Style that it’s putting plans for spinoffs of the hit show into major jeopardy.

“After trying to downplay the rumors for so long, Rudy pretty much threw [a] Molotov cocktail on the whole situation and now the drama is exploding all over again,” the source spills. “Obviously, he wouldn’t have unfollowed them if things were really totally fine, the way people in his camp have tried to claim.”

There’s still “a lot of secrecy around whether Rudy could possibly be brought back at some point,” the source explains, referring to his character’s untimely death in season 4, “but if things are so toxic with these guys it’s going to make producers think twice about wanting to deal with it.”

With the show’s final season set to begin shooting soon and the “massive success” it’s enjoyed in past years, the source notes that the network would “rather not close the door on it.”

“They really do need a spinoff,” the source continues. “That being said, if the cast is too much of a headache they very well might decide it’s not worth it and go a different direction.”

The Outer Banks follows a group of teens — led by John B. Routledge (Chase Stokes) — who embark on a search for a legendary piece of treasure with mysterious ties to John B’s father’s shocking disappearance. The adventure series has been certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and garnered a sizable fan base over its four seasons. Although an official spinoff is not currently in production, it has been hinted at by producers.

“We are excited for Season 5 and we’re excited for other stories in this universe down the line,” the show’s cocreators and executive producers – Jonas Pate, Josh Pate and Shannon Burke – gushed during a November 2024 interview with Deadline.

Amid rising hopes for expanding the Outer Banks universe, rumors of a feud between Rudy, 26, Madison, 26, and Madelyn, 27, have been swirling for more than a year — and they haven’t cooled down. Some fans speculated the shift initially occurred at a cast dinner that took place in 2023.

Shortly after the event, it was revealed that Rudy’s girlfriend, Elaine Siemek – who he’s been dating since November 2020 – and Madison were no longer following each other on Instagram. More digging revealed that Elaine, 29, and Rudy also reportedly unfollowed Madison’s girlfriend, basketball player Mariah Linney, who she’s been linked to for more than five years.

As Life & Style previously reported on February 25, Rudy more recently unfollowed Madison and Madelyn as well. While it’s unclear why he made the decision to remove them from his social media, some fans didn’t seem surprised, given the gossip about a potential feud.

“Well … the day has finally come and Rudy has officially unfollowed Madison on Instagram,” one person wrote on X next to a screenshot proving that he no longer follows his former costar. “A bit random to do it now after all that we endured over the last 4 years but hey! it’s never too late it seems.”

A separate source exclusively dished to Life & Style that there were times when Rudy and Madison found filming together “difficult.”

“There were a lot of whispers that things soured between them,” the source added. “They were very close friends at one point, and something did seem to happen to break that bond, which obviously would make filming together a struggle at times.”
