Rush Hour was far from the first action comedy around when it debuted in 1998, but it got the formula down almost perfectly. Take one brash American loudmouth cop and his stoic Hong Kong police inspector counterpart and throw them loose in Los Angeles. Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) has only come to America because his student, Soo-Yung (Julia Hsu), was taken hostage by a drug lord because her father is a diplomat.
The LAPD doesn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for Lee, nor are the local cops particularly friendly with Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker). Carter’s in the dog house, and that’s why he’s stuck attempting to keep Lee from wreaking havoc in the city. As it turns out, Lee and Carter have a lot in common once they put aside their differences. When that happens, the bad guys are gonna be in trouble.
Rush Hour is streaming on Netflix.
