Leslie Jones was on Touré Neblett’s Toure Show podcast and while talking about SNL, she recounted nearly getting into a fight with a segment director. Going by the context in her story, the director is believed to be Dave McCary, a former segment director/writer for SNL who is currently married to Emma Stone and is childhood friends with SNL alumni Kyle Mooney.
Touré brings up the running thread of SNL sketches involving Kyle Mooney and Leslie Jones being in a relationship which Leslie reveals she did not like (because the joke was their different physical builds and races, and Mooney was a Virgo). “First of all, the guy who would direct those was a fucking asshole. And I don’t give a fuck if you see this. You was a fucking– You still are probably– a fucking dickhead. A fucking narcissistic dickhead.”
When asked if something happens, she goes on, “He was just a fucking asshole! Just like one of them white boys who thought he’s doing fucking Shakespeare. No! This is a fucking sketch.” She says that it’s hard to explain. “It’s like a way a person can look at you that you’re just like, ‘Yeah, I know you’re calling me a n–. I know you’re calling me a n–.’ Cause he was a Mormon too! So he would just do little fucking antsy asshole shit, and the night that me and Tiffany Haddish almost beat him up.”
She continues to talk about a sketch that was filmed the week Tiffany Haddish hosted (which would’ve been November 2017). Jones recalls it as a sketch where she and Mooney got married, and the day had been running long with everyone still in the studio on a Friday night nearing 2 AM.
Apparently the hold up was waiting for Lorne Michaels to shoot pre-tape, but Leslie was ready to go home. “I’m in this big wedding dress. […] I cut my arm with the wire that was in there so my hand’s bleeding and shit. I’m like, ‘I’m goin home.’
“This motherfucker was like, ‘What makes you so fucking special?’ And I was like, ‘Who the fuck you talkin’ to?’ ‘You! I’m talking to you! What makes you so fucking special like Lorne is this this and this.’ I said, ‘Motherfucker, I know you not fucking talking to me. What makes me special is that the fucking sketch is about me and Kyle! Not you! So what the fuck!?'”
Things escalated where he continued to step to her while she yelled at him to back off, get out of her face, and walk away. And then host Tiffany Haddish came out of her dressing room and was ready to back up Leslie Jones in beating up the segment director.
And then they still had to film the segment. “Do you know we still had to go and shoot after that? So this motherfucker would come over and try to give a direction. I’d be like, “Don’t you put your motherfucking hand on me!’ and then the camera would come on. So every time they put up that picture cause it’s so beautiful, I’d be like, “That night was crazy.”
